Late 18thc portrait of Mrs Anne Bodham (nee Donne) by Lemuel Francis Abbott. In a contemporary style gilt frame. Unsigned, labels verso. He did not paint many portraits of women.

Mrs Anne Bodham was born in 1748 and was the first cousin of William Cowper the poet, whose portrait by the same artist, was commissioned for her by her nephew John Johnson. She aged 98 in 1846.

Lemuel Francis Abbott (1760-1803) was a renowned portrait painter whose image of 1st Viscount Horatio Nelson was one of his most well known, as well as painting other top literary figures and naval officers of the day.He was born in Leicestershire and studied under Francis Hayman and later Joseph Wright of Derby.

Provenance: by family descent.

In good condition, some craquelure, relined a long time ago. signs of wear to the frame, consistent with age.

Approx. Sight size: 29.5" high x 24.5" wide. Overall size : 39"high x 34" wide.
