1900 L Alphonse Hanne Terracotta Fisherman Figure

#230:
Here we have a beautiful small signed circa 1900 terra cotta sculpture by French artist Louis Alphonse Hanne 1856-1908. It features a figural fisherman and his wife, she with her fish in a basket. It has very clear detail and is very well done. These pieces had their heydey before the wars took its toll on France, and were sold as high quality art souvenirs to Victorian and Edwardian era tourists. This one is marked for "Hastings", see photos and measures 2.5 x 4.25 inches.
L'Isle Adam is located in the Val-d'Oise area of northern France. It is a small town along the the River Oise about 50 miles from Paris, and attracts many visitors. In the 19th c. L'Isle Adam became an important centre for ceramics production until sadly it was heavily bombed in WWII. Here a terracotta factory flourished and produced a prolific number of art pieces for the masses, the creative genius of 2 artists, Louis Alphonse Hanne 1856-1908 and Joseph Le Guluche 1849-1915.
This figural scene depicts a hardworking couple, in a direct and close up detailed folk art look at French rural life. The workmanship is stunning and detailed and these have become highly collectible in recent years. This one is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. It is signed "A Hanne" and has the stamped numbers 6 3 impressed in the redware clay.
This sculpture was found in Totnes, Devon, England. Click images to see condition in close up views. A wonderful 120 year old historical piece in excellent condition. It is a wonderful look at the enchantment of naive French rural life before the devastating affects of the 2 World Wars on Europe. It's also a great sport of fishing antique collectible.
