1933 Charles Frodsham Carriage Timepiece
We present for consideration, this exceptional Corinthian pillared carriage timepiece with masked floral fretwork front, by world famous English clockmaking firm ‘Charles Frodsham & Co.’, established in 1834. This clock probably being made in their pre-WWII works at 62 Beauchamp Place, London.
Born 1810 in London, such was Frodsham’s famed horological reputation that in 1854, his firm had become the official maintainers of British royal family clocks at all their palaces…Incredibly, a Royal Warrant that continued until c1979! He was also the last independent clock maker to have his own workshop at Buckingham Palace, and his royal connections guaranteed him exclusive commissions from UK and global aristocratic customers and the British Admiralty, the firms work commanding the very highest prices.
Frodsham passed away in 1871, and his ‘Times’ obituary stated that “during a long and honourable career, he distinguished himself by his devotion to the science of horology, which he greatly advanced, and his clever works upon the subject are regarded as authoritative by members of the trade…” On his death, Frodsham’s son Harrison Mill Frodsham took over the business, who continued to produce exceedingly high-quality clocks and chronometers (as did later generations of the family dynasty after that), and remarkably, the firm of Charles Frodsham & Co. Ltd is still in existence today at 32 Bury Street, St. James Square, London.
The case of this superb example sits on its bun feet and has 5 x bevelled glass tablets and 4 x three-quarter Corinthian style fluted brass columns. Above the upper corniche are mounted finials and a fluted swing carrying handle. The clocks creative frontage offers a fine handcrafted pierced gilt foliate fretwork mask, which surrounds a clean and circular white enamelled dial with black Roman numerals. The dial is then finished with its original pair of blued Pointer Spade hands.
The clock’s high-quality English made 8-day rear-winding movement (with a Frodsham signed plaque), is accessed via the clocks swing door the single train mechanism being driven by a wonderfully engineered, top mounted and Swiss made 7-jewelled platform escapement that helps the clock keep excellent time. The timepiece also comes with an authentic steel French winding key.
