19th C Cast Iron Royal Coat of Arms of the UK
Rare Early 19th C Cast Iron Royal Coat of Arms of the UK,
in the form of the royal crest with a crown, crowned lion and a unicorn, inscribed on a "white ribbon": DIEU ET MON DROIT.
The shield in the centre is divided into 4 quarters representing England (1st and 4th quarter), Scotland (2nd quarter) and Ireland (3rd quarter) and bears, what seems to be, the Royal Shield of Arms of the Kingdom of Hanover in the centre.
The Coat of Arms can be dated to circa 1814-1837:
The Kingdom of Hanover coat of arms was used between 1814 (Congress of Vienna) and 1837 (1837 upon the accession of Queen Victoria since semi-Salic law prevented females from inheriting the Hanoverian throne while a dynastic male was still alive).
The shield is surrounded by the inscription: HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE.
A new screw mount has been fastened into the back for display purposes. Very heavy item - almost 2kg in weight.
Original paint mostly remain. Wonderful condition for being ca 200 years old. Great decorative piece.
Approx. 25cm across and 25cm tall.
Weight over 1.9kg.
This item is available to view at the Red House Antiques Centre in York.
