19th C. English Oil Portrait Stuart Noblewoman

We are offering this beautifully executed late 19th Century English School portrait oil painting of an attractive lady, by an unknown artist. The portrait depicts a head and shoulders portrait of a very attractive young lady, with her fair piled up on her head and held in place by a jewelled circlet from which two strings of pearls are draped, which terminate in a gold, ruby and pearl drop on her forehead. She is wearing a stiffened lace collar, which is open at the front to frame the face, and she wears another string of pearls around her neck.
Her russet coloured dress has further lace adornments around the neckline and down the front and a white lace chemise is visible at her decolletage. We have dated her costume to the early 17th Century, as during the Elizabethan period the hair would have been covered by some form of headdress. Also lace from the Continent became available during the early 1600s. Judging by her antique jewellery she must have been a noblewoman of some distinction.
Unfortunately, we have no knowledge of either the artist or the possible identity of the sitter or model, as the painting is unsigned. The canvas is by Winsor & Newton Limited, Rathbone Place, London W. So on this basis, we would date it to the late 19th Century after 1882 at which date Winsor & Newton became a limited company. The painting was originally framed by Thomas Rowlands, 55 Lower Mosley Street Manchester.
The painting has been newly framed in a 4 1/2" bronzed frame, which tones with the painting very well. It will be supplied with new D-ring hangers, new wire and will be ready to hang.
Image size: 15 1/4" x 13 1/4" - 38.75cm x 33.65cm
Frame size: 25 1/2" x 23 1/2" - 64.6cm x 59.55cm
Medium: Oils on canvas
Condition: Very good. The surface of the canvas is clean and taut and there is no craquelure or paint loss. There is one repair to the back of the canvas, with resultant restoration to the front on the darker side of her cheek. The frame is new.
