19th C. Folding Campaign Travel Chair - Alderman

A very nice example of an antique folding campaign or sedan chair.
Ingenious and very well thought-out, this curious item features a cane seat and back support together with folding scroll armrests and two pairs of elegant, cast metal carrying arms, capped with wooden handles.
This piece dates to around the mid 19th Century and is absolutely of the period.
There are no maker's marks or labels present however the design is very similar to the campaign and sedan chairs manufactured by the highly regarded Alderman of London throughout the 19th century.
(John Alderman was registered in the commercial directories between 1865 to 1885, with a shop at 16 Soho Square, Soho and 50 Tottenham Court Road and the factory at 8 Denmark Street, in Soho).
This is probably quite an important and historic old chair. Please see N. Brewer, British Campaign Furniture, New York, 2001, p. 159, D.1-D.2 for a featured similar example.
A very self-contained item, folding down to a very small size. The scroll arms have a trigger mechanism to the underside, which locks in and out of place, as required. There is also a crossbar or handrail which locks into place, further bracing the armrests and providing the occupant with something to hold on to!
Constructed from a combination of woods, mainly satin birch.
This chair wears a particularly good patina and lovely rich colour arising from years of use and polish.
A very nice antique item to display or to add to an existing collection of campaign antique furniture or 19th century curios.
