19th C Oil on Canvas James Clark Poultry in Farmya work artwork rural %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
This is a 19th century oil on canvas depicting poulty feeding before a doorway in a farmyard. The painting is by James Clark (1858/1943) and is signed to the right bottom corner. Clark was a provincial English painter born in West Hartlepool who rose to prominence in 1914 when his 1st World War painting "The Great Sacrifice" was reproduced in the "Graphic" illustrated newspaper as a souvenir print. The artist has captured the poultry in the painting in a colourful style reminiscent of the early 19th century Henry Alken cockfighting engravings. The painting is in its original attractive gilt frame which has an art nouveau influence dating this to around 1890. The picture is a good size measuring 60 cms by 52 cms overall, including the frame.
