19th C Swedish Painted Top Drop-Leaf Dining Table

A Charming Early 19th Century Swedish Painted Pine Slagbord Drop-Leaf Dining Table, Sweden, circa 1820
This delightful early 19th century Swedish slagbord (drop-leaf) dining table is a superb example of rural Scandinavian craftsmanship combined with practical design. Made from solid pine and retaining enchanting remnants of its original painted finish, it offers both aesthetic charm and remarkable versatility.
The rectangular top, dry-scraped back through multiple layers of old paint, reveals a wonderfully timeworn surface. The green-painted top, decorated with delicate floral motifs, has developed a soft, mellow patina and an attractively distressed character that speaks to its age and authenticity.
Ingeniously constructed, the table features two large drop leaves that can be raised or lowered independently. When extended, they are supported by twin gateleg supports on each side, giving the table a total of eight legs when fully open and ensuring excellent stability for dining. With one or both leaves dropped, the table becomes a fantastic space-saver, ideal as a side table, sofa table, hall console, or centre table.
A single frieze drawer to each end, each fitted with a simple wooden knob, provides useful and discreet storage, enhancing the table’s functionality without distracting from its elegant, understated form. The chamfered legs and double trestle-style base further contribute to its sturdy yet refined appearance.
Originating from Sweden around the 1820s, this versatile piece works beautifully as a dining table, centre table, or as a charming accent in a kitchen or breakfast room. Its combination of original painted decoration, practical drop-leaf design, and honest antique patina make it an especially attractive addition to both traditional and contemporary interiors.
The measurements of the dining table top are 73cm/61cm/73cm long, 104.5cm wide and 75.5cm high
Height 75.5cm (29.7in)
Width 104cm (40.9in)
Length 207cm (81.5in)
