19th Century Crystoleum After Hermann Vogler

We are pleased to offer this attractive 19th Century Crystoleum picture, after the painting by the German artist Hermann Vogler, who was a ecorative and genre painter (1859 Berlin until after 1943), studied from 1878 at the Munich academy, 1893 probably further training at the Düsseldorf academy. It is signed H. Vogler in the lower right hand corner.
The picture depicts two elegant ladies feeding a flock of doves and fan tailed pigeons, while a well dressed gallant wearing a bicorn hat, Striped stoockings and holding a twisted walking cane, is seated in an x-frame chair watching them. The setting is an elegant park or garden.
Crystoleums were made during the late Victorian and Edwardian period, circa 1890-1910 and used a process whereby a photographic print was laid onto the inside of a piece of convex glass, the backing removed from the photograph, leaving the emulsion on the back of the glass. The photograph was then made transparent by the application of oil or wax. The fine detail of the picture was then executed with paint by a fine brush. After this, a second piece of convex glass was added to the back, not quite touching the first, upon which the broaded patches of colour were painted. The two pieces of glass were then attached at the outside edge. When the artist was satisfied with the final result, a piece of white card was added to the back and the whole picture was then framed.
Due to the fragile nature of crystoleums, many did not survive the passage of time.
The crystoleum is framed in an attractive, ornate, swept frame. It will be supplied with new brass hangers, new brass picture wire and will be ready to hang.
Image size: 10 x 7 3/16th inches - 25.4cm x 18.2cm
Frame size: 17 1/4 x 14 1/4 inches - 43.8cm x 36.2cm
Condition: Very good. The crystoleum is in perfect condition and the frame is also in excellent condition.
