19th Century Egyptian Revival Mantel Clock

A fine Egyptian Revival mantel clock retailed by D. Munsey of Cambridge, circa 1880s, black marble and slate clock case with elaborate bronze mounts.
The architectural case is surmounted by a finely cast bronze sphinx. Flanking the dial are two standing figures in the form of Egyptian deities or guardians, recalling the God Osiris (lord of the underworld and rebirth). Bottom of the clock case is further decorated with a winged scarab.
The circular dial, with gilt Roman numerals and jewelled gilt bezel, is signed “D. Munsey, Cambridge”, refering to David Munsey, a distinguished Cambridge jeweller and goldsmith who established his firm on Market Hill in 19th Century. Initially trading as David Munsey, the business became Munsey & Co. Ltd in 1901 and continued under the Jackson family into the 20th century, later merging into Northern Goldsmiths. The premises are still occupied today by Goldsmiths Jewellers, making this clock a rare surviving witness to over 140 years of Cambridge horological retail history.
This clock's French, striking, 8 day movement, was typical of the period, reflecting the strong Anglo-French trade in clockmaking. English jewellers and retailers of the late Victorian period, including Munsey, frequently commissioned cases in fashionable styles from France, housing robust and precise movements for their provincial clientele.
The clock is in good antique condition, with a small historic repair to one corner of the case. This work appears to have been carried out professionally many years ago and is barely noticeable when the clock is displayed. Otherwise, the piece remains beautifully preserved and in working condition.
Dimensions: 32 cm Length x 40 cm Height x 14 cm Depth
