19th Century French Bureau Plat

19th Century French Bureau Plat
An Exceptional Quality 19th Century French Bureau Plat with Ormolu Mounts.
This remarkable bureau plat has veneers of tulipwood and amaranth. The model is taken from the designs of the maker Phillipe-Claude Montigny, who became a master in 1766 and worked extensively for the royal family.
The original model upon which our piece is based was sold at Sotheby's in 2012 with a £200,000-£300,000 estimate.
It has a tooled leather top with a Greek key pattern, the pattern repeated in marquetry on the drawer fronts and the side friezes. The ormolu mounts consist of mouldings, floral paterae, sabots and escutcheons of the highest possible quality. The table has two pull out slides and has a decorative key.
A truly exceptional writing table that could only have been produced by one of the leading Parisian workshops of the period.
