19th Century George and the Dragon Flatback Figure

The subject of this mid 19th century Staffordshire figure is St George and the dragon , Victorian, circa 1860. 10.75ins high.
The subject was modelled in various ways during the 19th century, this particular figure has St. George on horseback, looking very much the Victorian hussar, holding a sword in his right hand with a flowing cape, the horse is rearing up over the dragon below, interestingly it is in a red colourway rather than the more typical green. This particular figure is one with three horse legs moulded free.
Vent hole and simple gold painted mark to underside
The condition of the piece is as a ceramic model, great condition all as it was when it came out of the mould, a little faint glaze crazing to the rear, but no breaks no chips and no repairs. The decoration is over glaze and as such has worn over the years, however this is a truly honest example of a rare Staffordshire model and deserves to be included in a collection.
Size: 10 1/2 inches high by 7 1/2 inches wide with a depth of 3 1/2 inches and unpacked weigh is 940 gms
References:
Similar piece illustrated figure 1215, page 331, Schiffer's 'Victorian Staffordshire Figures 1835-1875' Book 1, by A.& N. Harding Buchanan and Laing Galleries are a private client business. Appointments can be made by arrangement via email.
