An outstanding 19th Century japanned sewing/jewel chest with exquisite gilt decoration. Raised on paw feet with the original brass carrying handles. The centre design illustrates Chinese dignitaries in a garden surrounded by imposing dwelling and attended by numerous servants. This scene is framed with a border of dragons and birds. The canted and rounded corners depict scenes of domestic life surrounded by flowers and scrolls and this design is continued round the front, sides and back of the chest. The lid with working lock and key, lifts to reveal a tray with various compartments and the lower drawer, which locks, houses further beautifully lidded compartments, sewing tools and a selection of antique buttons. The condition of the chest is extremely good, the surface decoration shows very little sign of wear and the gilding is in lovely condition. There has been a historic repair to one foot which is not evident without careful examination. inside the base of the lower drawer there is a small crack to the surface lacquer, this is not detrimental as it cannot be seen unless the drawer is opened and the decorative cover lifted. This is a fabulous example of 19th Century chinoiserie style and would make a decorative addition to any interior.
