A 19th Century Indo Portuguese Colonial Chest. malabar chest indian portuguese %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
A 19th century Indo portuguese colonial Malabar chest, made from solid rosewood, with an abundance of brass pierced fretwork mounts and a heavily carved foliat frontage with original double locks and bronze and iron key. The side have massive brass locking carrying handles with geometric carved panels, which continues from the sides onto the back. The surface of the chest has a lovely rich patina and when you open the lid the interior has a pleasant sweet smell from the rosewood timbers. There are some minor losses to some of the brass work, and the double locks do work, however they don''t retract properly, so it would be advised not to lock the chest at present, the locks would need to be assessed by a compitent locksmith.

Overall the chest is in fantastic condition and is a lovely decorative piece.
