A Comfortable Victorian Button Back Tub Armchair

The generously proportioned walnut carcass upholstered in rich ruby rose fine corduroy button-back velvet, having carved front cabriole legs and central carved floral motif to the front rail, and rear sabre legs survives from the early to mid Victorian period.
The upholstery is original and in pretty good shape, the walnut veneer has knocking and wear to the top finish though we rather like this as its nice and authentic. The chair has some movement in the arms though the whole is sturdy and does not require re-springing or re-webbing.
It is rather difficult to say when the fist tub chair came into use but they have certainly been around since the sixteenth century as they could be found at British and French royal courts who used them when holding court. As the name suggests the traditional tub chair got its name from the idea of a tub, but in the form of a chair. What defines a tub chair is the way the chair curves around you as you sit in it.
A deep and roomy tub chair with a beautiful shape, proving totally inviting and nigh on impossible to leave whence comfortably positioned.
