A fine 16th c oil on panel portrait of an Elizabethan boy

A very fine example of a 16th century oil on oak panel of an Elizabethan youth. The image is very striking, the sitter wearing a ruff over which the artist, one can only imagine in a candle lit room sometime around the late 16th century, had a change of heart around how he should tackle. Traces of an earlier attempt at a ruff can can be very faintly made out to the left of the sitter, and the unusual decoration to the front of the ruff is also perhaps a similar change of heart. We have had the painting cleaned and very lightly restiored where there were some small areas of paint loss. The background is rather pleasing- a simple provincial grey which does not distract the eye from the porcelain skin of the Elizabthen youth.
There is a slight bowing to the four hundred years plus year old panel, but not overly so.
A deliciously rare early English oil on panel.
The measurement are approximate due to the unevenness of the oak panel in width.
