A Fine Early 20thC Antique Loggerhead Turtle Shell
The heart shaped carapace, probably from a relatively young male, having well-defined segments (scutes) to the shell, and well-formed skeletal ribs on the underside.
The condition is superb with a beautiful glossy glow radiating from the shell and there are no areas of loss. There is a small hole present at the top of the shell for hanging purposes.
Loggerhead turtles are recognised by their reddish-brown carapace that is elongated and heart-shaped and they nest on both the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. The maximum length is four feet. Their nesting season is May - August. The Loggerhead turtle is one of the best-loved of the turtle species, can grow to a length of 45 inches, and are known as ‘Loggerhead’ owing to their unusually large head. They were once hunted extensively for their meat and eggs, their egg shells were used for antique jewellery and combs, and their fat for cosmetics.
A very good example of its type and of superb colour.
