A Georgian Coquilla Nutmeg Grater c1800

This is a lovely example of a Georgian coquilla nutmeg grater c1800. It has been turned and carved to achieve the acorn shape. It has been polished to a high shine.
The coquilla nut is the fruit of the Brazilian Palm, which is closely related to the coconut palm. The nut is 3-4 inches long, and has a very hard, richly streaked brown shell that is capable of taking a fine polish. It is a source of palm oil. Back in the late 1700's, Coquilla nuts were converted into a variety of highly ornamental articles. These were coveted in the late 18th century and early 19th century as they were a show of one's connections to the explorations going on globally at that time.
