We are pleased to offer for sale this beautifully executed oil on canvas by the artist A. Johnson, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner. The painting depicts a battle at sea between a galleon of the British fleet, in the foreground flying the red ensign, and a French ship, which is almost enveloped in smoke from a broadside. The artist has managed to capture a great deal of movement in the painting.

Unfortunately, we have been unable to discover any biographical detail about the artist. There are many A. Johnsons and the work of some of them is unavailable to view, so it is impossible to check whether the signature is the same.

The painting is framed in a 2" gilt frame with beaded edge. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.

Medium: Oils on canvas

Condition: Very good. There is no craquelure to speak of, no stretcher marks or missing paint. The frame is also in very good condition.
