A Magnificent 16th Century Burgundian Cupboard.

A magnificent 16th century Burgundian cupboard or Armoire a deux corps.
For many years any piece of 16th century antique furniture carved in vigorous high relief tended to be attributed to one master Hugues Sambin of Dijon. A closer study reveals the equally strong influence of Ducerceau, whose engraved designs were consulted all over France. In the 16th century , Dijon was the great centre for cupboards of this type, and the Burgundian woodcarvers were highly influentual.
This cupboard is a fine example of their work. Lavishly carved throughout having a multiple paneled facade with strap-work designs, guilloche boarders flanked by caryatids and columns with further strap-work. The carving follows round the right side of the cupboard and the left side being of plainer molded fielded panels. This was made like this to stand in a certain place in a chateau where only the right side would be visible.
The for doors open to reveal integral shelves, both doors have catches and working locks with keys.
The cupboard has had some restorations in the 19th century which is common with furniture of this age.
The colour and patination is superb and the overall condition of the piece is excellent.
Dimensions
Height = 194 cm (76.4")
Width = 144 cm (56.7")
Depth = 60 cm (23.6")
