Albert Wainwright Castle Peasant Pottery Mug 1919

An extremely rare mug, hand painted by Albert Wainwright at the Castleford Peasant Pottery c1919.
A classmate and friend of Henry Moore, he was an artist, illustrator and author, best known for his guide to The Lake District, which has become a standard reference work. He painted only a handful of mugs and beakers at Castleford after attending pottery lessons with Moore, and they have become much sought after. This one features groups of choir boys against a green background. The mug has had some damage (crack) to the top rim which has been professionally restored and is now invisible. Marked to the base with his monogram 'B' ( for 'Bertie' Wainwright) and CPP for Castelford Peasant Pottery. The mug is 8cm high.
