Alfred Fontville de Breanski Oil on Canvas Alfred Fontville de Breanski Victorian Oil Painting %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We are delighted to offer for sale this beautiful oil on canvas by the artist ALFRED FONTVILLE DE BREANSKI, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner A. Fontville, and inscribed it verso 'In Burnham Wood' and A. Fontville. This was the name that he used for his early works, later using A F De Breanski, A. De Breanski Jr. and A. Fontville de Breanski. The painting depicts an autumnal lake scene, with a pair of swans on a lake, with a pair of moorhens in the distance. The bracken on the banks has turned golden and the silver birch trees are losing their leaves.

ALFRED FONTVILLE DE BREANSKI 1877-1957, was the eldest son of the highly regarded Victorian painter Alfred de Breanski 1852-1928. He was one of seven children and his mother was the Welsh painter Annie Roberts. His Uncle Gustave de Breanski was a noted marine painter and his Aunt Julie was a trained artist. Altogether a family of great artistic talent. His brother Arthur was also a painter, but moved to the United States, changed his name to Arthur Wynne and, after appearing in a Broadway play, became a picture dealer.

He was trained by his father, studied at St. Martin's School of Art in London and in Paris under James McNeill Whistler. In his early years his paintings were very similar to those of his father - Welsh and Highland scenes but in a broader style and there is often confusion between the two. However, from about 1905 he painted a series of garden paintings in impressionist style, which are highly regarded, some of which were shown at the Royal Academy. In 1915, he was approached by London Transport and he produced two art nouveau posters of Twickenham and Kew Gardens, to promote Tram transport.

He lived in London, but in later life moved to Tunbridge Wells, Kent, where he died in a nursing home at the age of 80 in 1957.
