An attractive American-style rocking chair, probably dating from the late Victorian period, circa 1880–1900. The chair has a tall, gently reclining back supported by turned uprights with decorative finials, together with turned spindle supports beneath the arms.

The substantial timber frame, which appears likely to be walnut or a similarly coloured hardwood, has numerous turned details characteristic of American rocking chairs of the period. Particularly appealing are the shaped wooden rockers and the exposed coil-spring suspension beneath the seat, designed to provide additional comfort while rocking.

The chair is upholstered in a muted green patterned fabric across the seat, back panel, arms and upper back rail. Traditional upholstery studs secure the back covering and add to its period character.

With its high back, generous proportions and combination of rocking and sprung movement, this is a comfortable and highly decorative piece of late 19th-century seating, suitable for a period interior, fireside setting, study or reading room.

The timber has developed an attractive warm patina. The green upholstery shows some noticeable fading, discolouration and general wear, particularly across the lower portion of the back. The exposed springs and rocking mechanism show age and use but appear substantially complete from the photographs.
