An unusually interesting carved Arts & Crafts metamorphosing step chair. The chair has a good patina from extensive use but it has no damage. What is unusual is the backrest which has been designed to contain a beautiful ceramic tile depicting Ivanhoe slaying Bois Gilbert designed and signed by John Moyr Smith (1839-1912) who was one of the most original and idiosyncratic 19th Century designers. His quirky and fantastic designs creating a familiar and stimulating resonance within the viewer's experience, but always retaining an edginess, at one time worked at Mintons.
The chair is 89cm high x 38cm depth x 46cm wide. The steps are 90cm high.
