An Oak Case 8 Day Clock by John Seymour of Wantage
A nice early georgian longcase clock by John Seymour of Wantage, 10" square brass base with 4 divisions between the numerals on the inner part of the chapter ring. Matted centre to the dial with no decoration. A good clean 8 day movement in perfect working order. Keeps perfect time. Brass face lead filled pendulum bob. A pair of iron weights probably not the originals. All this mounted in a nice oak case with good patination. The door has a lock with its original key. A perfect cottage antique clock with the dimensions
Height 1890mm
Width at widest point 410mm
Depth 230mm
It appears that John Seymours Father and Grandfather were both clock makers and blacksmiths of the same name. One of them we believe the grandfather made the faceless chiming clock at St Augustines church in East Hendridge near Wantage. The faceless clock made in 1525 is thought to be the oldest clock in the country that is still in use.
