An unusual object made from a tortoise shell by the bushmen of South African the Khoisan tribe. It is in fact a powder compact that was filled with sweet smelling powder and worn as a decoration. This one dates from the turn of the century I know this as it was bought from the grand daughter of a first WW German navel officer who was in Africa around the early part of the century.
