This is an antique campaign mess table. An English, walnut oval folding table with Naval influence, dating to the late Victorian period, circa 1900. A superb example of portable craftsmanship, rich with maritime heritage and character.
Fine Victorian campaign table in walnut, with warm caramel hues and appealing grain
Presents in good antique order, with lightly timeworn charm commensurate with age
Striking oval top, centred with a relief carved medallion of exceptional detail
Medallion bears Sir Walter Raleigh’s family motto, encircling a knight’s helmet
Amore et Virtute translates to English as 'By Love and Valour'
Raleigh (1552-1618) is to this day associated with the Royal Navy, with his eponymous training base in Cornwall, UK
Table edge decorated with a chased foliate border , adding distinguished visual impact
Standing upon four turned legs with a tapering cupped stretcher — removable for ease of transit
Each leg folds inwards, designed with campaign practicality in mind
