Antique English Oak & Brass Letters Box c.1890

An unusual example, I have had many similar open at the top, but I have only had one of these with the closed box with a hinged lid.
Made from solid English Oak, the front has a highly decorative fretted and engraved brass panel allowing one to see if there were any letters inside.
These would have been used in hotels, private clubs and the grandest of homes, where letters would have been collected by staff for taking to the post office.
The box comes complete with a period key and the lock working, once locked the key remains in the box and cannot be removed when locked (mentioned purely for accuracy) the slot in the top of the lid is marked with a brass mounted plaque, engraved "Letters".
Excellent condition measuring 10 1/2" x 4 3/4" x 7 1/2" tall to the top of the back panel. This panel has two holes for wall-hanging if desired, but is equally at home on a table or desk-top.
