Antique French painting of St. John the Baptist
Antique French painting from the late 18th century. Oil on panel artwork depicting a religious subject, Saint John the Baptist in Meditation, with a moderately skilled painterly quality. This small painting is adorned with a modern carved wooden frame and partial gilding (bronze tint).
This artwork is inspired by the beautiful painting Saint John the Baptist in Meditation in the Desert from the late 16th century, exhibited at the Pinacoteca Nazionale di Siena, and reproduces the engraving by Calude Mellan (1598-1688), a famous French engraver and painter.
The panel has a crack at the bottom and some minor paint loss (see photo). The painting underwent conservative restoration with restoration of color in some areas during the 20th century. Overall, the painting is in fair condition. Internal dimensions: H 49 x W 38.5 cm. As each of our products will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity and warranty and photographic documentation. Every item will be packed in a custom-made wooden box.
