Antique hardwood merchants valuables chest
This Antique hardwood merchants valuables chest was made in the 19thc.
Merchants would need to have secure storage for items that they were taking for their precious goods, as they travelled along the trading routes of the East.
The 3/4 width lid opens to reveal a large open storage space.
This is lovely colour and is polished all around and so will make a wonderful coffee table, and conversation piece.
A special feature on this example, is the superb lock plate and hasps. They are simple in construction, but their hand made appearance, just add the extra enchanting feel to this box, and conjures up thoughts of the treasure it would have carried, as it was lashed to a ships desk, or on wagons and mules or even elephants as it went on the long treks in India and the rest of the Orient.
