Antique McFerran Silver Fusee Pocket Watch, 1875

Antique Mcferran Silver Fusee Pocket Watch, 1875.
The watch has a fusee movement which is working nicely, a later winding key is included. The movement is signed Wm McFerran, Manchester and it is all protected by a fitted inner cover.
William McFerran, born in 1804, he was a goldsmith and silversmith and also a notable watchmaker, clockmaker and jeweller whose shop was located in Victoria Street, Manchester.
As well as supplying the public, McFerran supplied time pieces for railways guards, porters and train drivers as well as exporting to countries like USA and Australia.
In 1867 McFerran's antique jewellery shop was broken into and some £13,000 was taken, a hugely significant amount at the time.
The watch measures 50mm diameter excluding the stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside both of the case backs for London 1875 with a case maker's mark for the Coventry case maker Robert Pike. The case is in very nice condition for such an early piece, just some rubbing to the edge of the engine turned detail to the case back. There is a vacant cartouche.
The watch glass is in lovely condition.
The off-white dial has the number 42904, this number can also be found on the inside of the case back and on the movement. The dial is in very nice condition and the large subsidiary seconds dial is an attractive feature... at the time of manufacture, this would have been for someone who needed to time an event, such as a doctor or perhaps it was one of the pieces supplied to a railway worker.
The watch will be sent in a new presentation box. ALL PRICES INCLUDE UK POSTAGE (excluding Northern Ireland).
Please contact us before placing international orders so that we can advise of shipping prices and to see if customs regulations allow us to post watches to your country.
The international buyer is responsible for paying any import duties and taxes.
All of our watches are checked over before listing, and are also checked for accuracy which is usually within around +/- two to three minutes over 24 hours (unless otherwise stated), which is considered respectable for a vintage watch.
We are a VAT registered company and all purchases are covered by Consumer Regulations.
Credit / debit card purchases can be made over the telephone on 01386 750238 or you can proceed via the \'Buy Securely\' button on each listing page.
We are an on-line only business and do not have facilities for callers. Our offices are open from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.
With regards to appraisals / valuations, we receive a huge number of information requests each day and unfortunately do not have the manpower to deal with them all individually. Our advice would be to contact a local auctioneer for a full appraisal.
