Antique Oil Painting JF Slater Chickens


This is a delightful impressionist oil painting by John Falconer Slater (1857-1937) depicting a country garden scene with a greenhouse and shed and an old wooden wheelbarrow with hens pecking in the foreground. Slater has used impasto perfectly here to create a rich textured surface. The painting is signed to the lower right. The painting is signed to the lower right. This measures 73 cms by 57 cms including the frame.
John Falconer Slater was a prolific artist based in Tyneside in the north east of England, most well known for his impressionist paintings. He painted, in both oil and watercolour, various subject matter including landscapes, coastal scenes, wildlife and urban/street scenes. Slater originally worked at his fathers corn mill as a book-keeper, then he ran a store in the diamond fields of South Africa before returning home to paint professionally. Slater exhibited his work 22 times at the Royal Academy. He also exhibited at the Liverpool Walker Gallery, Manchester City Art Gallery and the Newcastle Laing Art Gallery.
