This is a striking 19th century portrait of an officer in red tunic wearing the rank of Major. The painting dates from around 1880 and is a good scale that gives a great impression in a room. The colours are bold and strong and the Major confidently posed, has a fine set of whiskers. There are a couple of old repairs to the reverse of the canvas as shown and areas of craquelure to the paint and varnish. The canvas is slightly loose to the stretcher at the top corners.
British school circa 1880 in later frame.
The painting measures 90 cms by 67 cms overall including the frame.
