Antique Pompeian Bloom Compact Rouge 1920
An ancient and historically important compact rouge in excellent condition. Made as a container for rouge in 1920 this compact box is decorated with the meander or 'Greek Key' design which is also known as ‘ meandros’. It is constructed from a continuous line & shaped into a motif which is then repeated. AKA the Greek fret design although this & the name Greek key are modern names. The ‘meander’ is said to represent the twisting & turning of the Meander River in Asia Minor. The meander can also be described as a linear form of labyrinth.
The ‘meander’ was considered one of the most important symbols in Greece. It symbolized infinity, unity, eternal love & friendship. Making this hard to find vanity a perfect St Valentine's Day gift.
The 'meander' surrounds a granular area on the compact lid which in turn borders the heart which forms a cartouche containing 'POMPEIAN BLOOM' in highly stylized script. This iconic vanity was the first metal compact box made by the Pompeian Company. This comes with a large historical fact pack. All clasps ad hinges work perfectly. This antique has a huge amount of the most gorgeous patina which is very pleasing.
