Antique set of Farthingale Chairs 17th Century farthingale chairs oak country chairs %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
FARTHINGALE CHAIRS

This is a very rare set of farthingale chairs in oak from the 17th Century c1640-60, they could be as late as 1680. At this point chairs were jointed and this is accepted as the first design to be a comfortable chair. Dating from the English Civil war and the days of Cromwell. This set is a harlequin set with two pairs being identical. If you look at the front uprights near the top of them you will see a slight difference in the turnings. The variation is very slight and hard to see, these chairs were very expensive things in there day. They have classic form with bobbin turned stretchers. We are selling the frames un-upholstered, there are repairs to these chairs from the centuries as you would expect from chairs that are 350-370 years old. They are a good solid set and like the last set we sold are good example and are 17th Century, please read the section on this website About us to see our CV,s.

Please ring for more information if you want to chat about condition or just come and have a look.

They are

19 inches wide

38 inches high

16 inches deep

frame seat height is 18 inches in this stripped state before upholstery
