Antique Silver Dial Fusee Pocket Watch,1869.

Immaculate, mid-19th Century open-faced silver fusee pocket watch, by master watchmaker John Pilkington, of Victoria Place, Darlington, Durham.
Born 1827, in Heighington, Durham, Pilkington served his apprentiship under Anthony Binks (c1840-1846), at Blackwell Gate, Darlington, before setting-up his own business at Victoria Place, in the town. Pilkington became well-known and respected throughout England’s north-east region, specialising in producing high-quality timepieces for the middle and upper classes, such as this fine example.
Pilkington passed away in Darlington in 1882, (aged just 55) and during his domestic life, he had married twice (to Elizabeth and Martha) and parented a large family. One of his sons, Edward, (born 1851), followed his farther into watchmaking, becoming a highly respected watchmaker himself from his base in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
Hallmarked London 1869, this high-quality watch has a silver dial with central machine turned Guilloché pattern and a subsidiary second’s dial. Blued hands, Gothic style raised gold numerals, and hand-crafted central gold floral decoration. The dial is then protected by lunette glass. The case maker was Samuel Freeman (“SF”), of Trafalgar Street, Coventry and the case and movement serial numbers are the same, “29608.”
The fusee movement with dust cap and an engraved Coventry made Star Mark of quality, has a silver balance and diamond end stone.
The watch comes in an executive PU leather storage / display case with a winding key, together with instructions on how to wind and set the watch time.
Note: This watch does not come with a chain or fob. If you require a silver chain/fob from our large stock, please contact us for advice.
