Antique Victorian Specimen Marble Top Centre Table

A highly decorative antique Victorian specimen marble top centre table raised upon an outstanding carved mahogany base with elegant swan supports. This unusual and eye-catching table combines fine cabinet making with the Grand Tour taste for colourful decorative hardstones and marbles.
The circular top is beautifully inlaid with an impressive arrangement of specimen marbles and polished hardstones displaying a striking variety of colours and natural patterns centred by a malachite roundel. The richly figured mahogany frieze is adorned with decorative ormolu mounts while the shaped platform base retains further ormolu mounts to the base edges adding an extra touch of refinement and quality.
The superb carved mahogany base stands upon elegant swan supports terminating on the shaped platform base giving the table an exceptional sculptural appearance from every angle.
Specimen marble tables such as this were highly fashionable during the Victorian period and were often inspired by the celebrated pietra dura and Grand Tour pieces collected throughout Europe. Designed as statement pieces they were traditionally placed within drawing rooms, libraries or entrance halls where they could be admired for both their craftsmanship and exotic materials.
An exceptional decorative antique table of wonderful scale and quality.
