Antique Waltham pocket watch, railroad movement

Antique Waltham pocket watch, railroad movement.
The watch has a railroad grade 645 stem-winding movement which is working nicely.
The great North American railroad watch became an institution after a fatal crash in 1891, which was caused in part by the stopping and then restarting of the engineer's watch, which caused it to be four minutes slow. In the early days of railroading, when trains ran by strict time and timetable rules, that four minutes proved to be fatal. As a result, in 1893, the General Railroad Timepiece Standards were adopted, which mandated high grade specifications including a minimum of 17 jewels in the movement, five adjustments and micro-metric regulation.
This particular movement has a 21 jewel movement, adjusted in five positions, and an Ohlson 1908 micro-meter regulator.
The movement is fully signed and it has the serial number 22,200,116 which dates it back to 1918.
The watch measures 50mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is gold filled and was made by the Illinois Watch Company of Elgin. The case and movement are not original to each other but sit well together. The case is beautifully decorated and the condition is good, just some slight unevenness to the back.
The acrylic lens has light marking but not too detrimental at all.
The dial has a short hairline through number 5 but otherwise is in good condition. Blued steel hands which are lever set (so the bezel has to be unscrewed, the lever gently pulled out and the hands set).
The watch comes in a new presentation box.
ALL PRICES INCLUDE UK POSTAGE (excluding Northern Ireland).
Please contact us before placing international orders so that we can advise of shipping prices and to see if customs regulations allow us to post watches to your country.
