Antique Yoruba Stool, West African, Benin Kingdom
This is an antique Yoruba chief's stool. A West African, Benin Kingdom hardwood ceremonial lamp or side table, dating to the late 19th century, circa 1900.
Striking example of West African tribal craftsmanship
Displays a desirable aged patina - minor natural split to top adding to the character
Naive hand-carved hardwood presents dark russet hues
Ovoid top with thick rolled edge siting above the whole
Pair of supporting figures stand alongside a distinctive, smiling leopard
Standing upon a hollowed circular base with gently chamfered edges
