Arthur Gilbert 1819-95 Oil Loch Scene

We are delighted to offer this oil on mahogany panel by the highly regarded artist ARTHUR GILBERT, as named and titled on the old framer's label verso. This oil is in totally original condition, in its original frame. It is likely that the artist entitled the painting under the framer's brown paper tape, but we did not think it prudent to remove it. The painting depicts a couple of anglers fishing on the banks of a loch, with a ruined castle high on a hillside in the distance. There is a yacht on the far side of the loch.
ARTHUR GILBERT 1819-1895, was born Arthur Gilbert Frederick Williams, the fourth son of Edward 'Old' Williams, 1782-1855 and a member of the Williams family of painters. The father and all six sons, as well as Arthur Gilbert's son and daughter were exhibited painters and the their biography entitled 'The Williams Family of Painters' by J. Reynolds was published in 1975. Along with his brothers Sidney Richard (Percy) and Henry John (Boddington), he dropped his surname to avoid confusion with other members of his family and was henceforth known as Arthur Gilbert.
Arthur Gilbert was born in Stoke Newington, London. He married Elizabeth Williams in 1843 at St. Martins in the Fields. Apparently he was of a gentle disposition and was a devoted husband and father. Elizabeth died of TB in 1848 and left him with a daughter Kate Elizabeth. He remarried in 1854 in Barnes and had a son, Horace Walter Gilbert. Both children were artistically talented and painted and exhibited. He had homes in Weybridge and Hammersmith but lived most of his life in Lonsdale Terrace, Barnes, near to his father and brothers. In 1873 he moved to Redhill in Surrey and then to De Tillens House, Limpsfield, Surrey where he spent many years, although he died in Croydon in 1895, possibly at his daughter's address.
He exhibited at the Royal Academy 1836-1894 (48 paintings), at the British Institution 1842-1894 (51) and Suffolk Street (111). He also exhibited at certain major provincial exhibitions. Titles at the Royal Academy include river scenes, moonlight and twilight scenes and from 1874 a few Egyptian landscapes. He painted almost exclusively in oil, mostly small oils on panel or canvas and produced very detailed work. His biographical details are available in The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood and his London exhibitions in Graves Dictionary. There is also a biography of him on Wikipedia.org.
