We are delighted to offer this rather beautiful watercolour of orchids by the artist Arthur J. Capey, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner. The painting depicts two white orchid flowers, with maroon and yellow throats, which resemble those of the dendrobium nobile orchid. The flowers have been painted in exquisite detail.

Arthur James Capey, was born on the 17th December 1864 in Wolstanton Staffordshire. He attended Wedgwood Institute Art Classes in the early 1880s, where, in the second grade, his drawing was marked excellent. He was listed as a potter in the 1881 Census, but by 1891, he was a Potters Decorators Manager and by 1901, Potters Designer, as he was also listed in the 1911 Census. However, in the 1939 Register, he was listed as an Earthenware Manufacturer (retired) and was living in Newcastle under Lyme. He died in 1948.

We presume that he painted for pleasure, as we cannot find any other auction records for his work in recent years, although there is an artist and industrial designer by the name of Reco Capey, who may be a relative. It seems that the Capey name is or was local to the Staffordshire area.

The painting has been newly double mounted in two tone acid free mountboard and is newly framed in a 1 7/8" silver gilt mottled frame to suit. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
