Autumn Gold oil painting by G Percival Gaskell
A fine oil on canvas landscape titled ‘August Gold’ by the highly regarded artist George Percival Gaskell 1868-1934. The title ‘August Gold’ refers to the wonderful landscape of wheatsheaves standing in the field drying in the summer sun. The landscape is beautifully depicted in a style at once realistic and detailed but also with impressionist influences. The detail is cleverly observed from the intertwined wheatsheaves to the green grass starting to sprout through the freshly cut stubble. The work is signed to the lower left in a typically florid script ‘G.P.Gaskell’ and dated 1896, to the lower right of the painting is also a dedication where I believe the work was given as a gift in 1899. The painting is in good condition with just some minor professional repair to the sky in the top left, it has also been cleaned and varnished. The frame is of the period but not original to the work it has a good faded look with worn gilding and some old areas of restoration.
George Percival Gaskell was born 1868 in Shipley and died in Hampstead in 1934. He was educated at the Leys School, Cambridge and studied at the Royal College of Art and then in Paris and Italy. Gaskell became a University Extension lecturer at Oxford, Cambridge and London on the history of art and on Italian painting. He was appointed Assistant Master at the Ilkley School of Art from 1886 until 1888, and from 1896 until his retirement in 1930, he was Headmaster of Regent Street Polytechnic, London, responsible for the art training of students. He was also a Staff Lecturer at the University of London. In his own work, he painted mainly landscapes in oils and watercolour and was also noted for his etchings and mezzotints. He exhibited works at the Royal Academy, Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour, and the Paris Salon. Gaskell was elected as a member of Royal Society of British Artists in 1896 (The year of this work) and a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers in 1911. He was also a member of the Art Workers Guild and on the committee of the Durer Society. His exhibited output was prolific including 60 works at the Royal Academy and 101 at the Royal Society of British Artists. This work includes a title, name and address on the reverse of the stretcher often an indication that the piece was exhibited.
The painting is a fine example of the artist’s work and of late Victorian landscape painting, as well as being a charming and decorative period artwork.
