This stunning 19th.c. painted pine armoire would have been produced in the alpine German state of Bavaria as part of a lady’s marriage dowery. Retaining it’s original painted decoration to imitate the grain of quartered and crossbanded veneers, and dated 1834. Large flared cornice over two doors (an unusual feature as they are often found with a single door) with lozenge recess panels, metal handles and key plate and prominent centre molding. Canted corners with simple fretwork detail and raised on bun feet. Probably originally intended as storage for clothes, the interior has at some point been fitted with four shelves to provide more useful storage for a living room or kitchen. Condition is excellent with only minor wear to the paintwork on one side and some old wormholes (typical in antique pine). Original handles, hinges, lock and key.
