Borgel Cased Pocket Watch, IWC

A very rare Borgel cased pocket watch retailed by IWC, dated to 1904. A high quality IWC mechanism signed 'peerless', stamped with the mark for Stauffer & Co. An enamel dial with Roman numerals and blued steel hands. An oversized subsidiary seconds dial to 6 o'clock. Case inner stamped with the FB logo of Francois Borgel company. A front opening case with a screw in mechanism acting as a waterproof seal.
Francois Borgel was a pioneer in the design and manufacturing of early waterproof watch cases. They became popular due to their use by officers in the trenches during the great war and were often advertised as 'active service watches' to the public. Longines and IWC were two companies who adopted the screw case design in its early stage.
