Brodie & Middleton Compendium of Artists’ Colors


Brodie & Middleton Compendium of Artists’ Colors, late 19th century, in original hinged mahogany case bearing the firm’s printed label and fitted with an array of pigments in cork-stoppered glass vials and a white-glazed ceramic color chart.
The case is secured at the front with two catches, one is missing and there is slight warping to the lid. The interior of the lid is lined with the original velvet.
The box dates to c.1880 and measures 11 3/4" x 8 1/4" x 2".
Note: In their trade catalogue of August 1873 Brodie & Middleton described the business as established 1840, and advertised in sections as follows: superfine watercolours, colours and materials for illuminating, superior photographic watercolours, glass painting watercolours, drawing papers including Turnbull’s Bristol and London boards, brushes for watercolour painting, earthenware, enamel colours, etching and copper plate materials, oil colours, oils, varnishes, etc., brushes used in oil painting etc.
