C. Harpsau 19th C. German Oil Sunset Landscape

We are offering for sale this atmospheric landscape oil painting on canvas by the German artist C. Harpsau, who has signed the painting Harpsau in the lower right hand corner. The painting depicts a woman, with her son and daughter, walking along a path that runs away from a river or lake. The son is collecting firewood at the side of the path and the woman is carrying something in her apron. There is a church spire visible in the distant background and cattle grazing of the far banks. The trees are silhouetted against the setting sun.
There is little biographical information available about this artist on the web, other than the German nationality and 19th Century, and we cannot find him or her listed in Benezit. However, there are some pictures of previous works on the net, and the artist seems to specialise in landscapes and paintings of cows and chickens.
The name of the artist is sometimes listed as Harpsal. Christies sold a painting 26" x 18 1/2" in November 1998 for £1,600 and a pair of 14" x 9" were sold in New Orleans for £1,369.
The painting is framed in a 3" ornate swept mottled gilt frame and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
Image size 24 7/8" x 18 3/4" - 63.15cm x 47.6cm
Frame size 31 1/2" x 25" - 80cm x 63.5cm
Medium Oils on canvas
Condition Excellent condition. There are no repairs to the canvas, which is clean and taut. There are no stretcher marks, craquelure or paint loss. The frame is in very good condition.
