Cape Town Parliament Cream Jug, Elkington, 1911
This is an interesting little early 20th century Silver Plate Cream Jug from the South African Houses of Parliament in Cape Town. The cream jug is small with tapering sides and a scroll handle. One side of the body is stamped with an oval belt featuring the words Houses of Parliament Cape Town.
Although made for use in South Africa, the cream jug is made in Birmingham by world famous silversmiths and electroplaters Elkington & Co and dates to 1911. Founded by George Elkington in 1836, in 1838 they registered the world's first patent for electroplating silver and by 1840 production was in full flow. They remained one of the most esteemed names in English silverware and electroplate until they were merged with Walker & Hall and Mappin & Webb to form British Silverware in 1963.
Condition is good, with no dings or dents, no significant plate loss and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 110 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
This is a small cream jug intended for an individual serving. It is 4.6cm / 1.8ins from lip to handle, 3.4cm / 1.3ins in diameter and stands 4.7cm / 1.85ins high. It weighs in at 40.4g / 1.4oz.
