We are offering for purchase this lovely marine seascape oil on canvas by the German artist Carl Kenzler, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner C. Kenzler. The painting depicts the sun setting over the sea, with a low lying land mass to the left horizon. There are some rocks to the left side and foreground. The artist was known for his seascapes, sunsets and snow scenes primarily in oils, although he did also paint in gouache and pastel. Although the painting itself is undated, the frame, which may be the original, bears a Frost and Reed label dated 1935, as shown.

Carl Kenzler was born in Germany circa 1872. We state circa, as some of the German auction houses quote 1872 and some 1880, although they all agree that he died in 1947. Similarly some state that he was born in Potsdam and died in Berlin and some give the opposite location. As we have no access to German birth and death registrations, we cannot confirm which is correct.

The painting is framed in a 2" - 2 1/2" dull silver or gunmetal coloured pierced swept frame and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.

Condition Very good condition with no paint loss, repairs or craquelure. There are very slight stretcher marks consistent with age. The original frame is in very good condition with some cracking consistent with age.
