Charles H.H.Burleigh ROI Oil/Canvas Chrysanthemums


We are pleased to offer for sale this lovely impressionist oil on canvas by the artist Charles H. H. Burleigh, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner. The painting depicts a lustre jug, filled with pink and white chrysanthemums sitting on a table.
Charles H. H. Burleigh ROI, 1869-1956, was born in Brighton in Sussex in 1869 and lived there or in Hove, Sussex, for the rest of his life. He studied at Brighton School of Art and in Paris under J. Laurens. He was a landscape, flower and interior scenes painter in oils and occasionally watercolours.
He was married, (in 1904),to the artist Averil M. Burleigh RI, ARWS, ASWA, (1883-1949), who was a painter and illustrator who also studied at Brighton School of Art, and they commissioned to be built No. 7, Wilbury Crescent, Hove, Sussex. In 1909, their daughter Veronica (1909-1999) was born, who was a landscape, figure and portrait painter, who won a Scholarship to the Slade School. A talented family, who are all listed artists.
There are 22 paintings by Charles Burleigh in the Brighton Art Gallery and 1, of an interior scene in the Geffrye Museum in Shoreditch in London.
He exhibited 26 paintings at The Royal Academy, 93 at The Royal Oil Painters Institute, where he was elected a full Member in 1915, 15 at the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours, 4 at The Fine Art Society and 1 at the Royal Society of British Artists, as well as some other galleries in London.
There is a lot of biographical information and images on google, as well as his listing in the Dictionary of British Artists (Collector's Club) and The Dictionary of British Artists by Grant Waters.
Auction results for his work are available at artprice (103 listings), artnet (51), findartinfo (50) and arcadja (30). The highest price achieved for one of his works in the last ten years has been £3,000 at Bonhams.
The painting is framed in a 2 3/4" gilt frame and is ready to hang.
