Charles Leslie 1839-1886 Oil Loch Landscape

We are delighted to offer for sale this well executed and beautifully toned oil on canvas by the artist Charles Leslie, who has signed the painting Chas. Leslie in red in the lower left hand corner and dated it either 65 or 85. The painting depicts a loch or lake landscape at dawn, with the tops of the mountains tinged pink by the rising sun. There are a few clouds in the sky and the surface of the water is calm. There are three figures sitting by the edge of the loch by some boulders, one of whom is fishing.
CHARLES LESLIE, was a landscape painter, who specialised in Welsh and Scottish scenes. He lived on Wimbledon Common and flourished between 1856 and 1863, when he was exhibiting, although he was obviously still painting in 1885. He exhibited 5 works at the Royal Academy between 1856 and 1862, 3 at the British Institution, 16 at Suffolk Street and 24 at various other London exhibitions. His biographical information is available in The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood and his exhibition history in Graves Dictionary.
